ZCTU opposes Dr. Chitalu Chiufya’s proposed recruitment of retired doctors and nurses

The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions [ZCTU] has opposed governments intentions to engage retired health workers to help reinforce the human intensive countrywide fight against Coronavirus (covid 19) pandemic, which by Press Time had recorded 84 cases.
Recently, Health Minister Dr. Chitalu Chilufya reported that government though Ndeke House was contemplating engaging a number retired health workers to complement the existing cadre of doctors and nurses in the medical fight against covid 19.
But when reached for a comment, in Lusaka, ZCTU General Secretary Cosmas Mukuka disagreed with a proposition unveiled by Dr. Chilufya on account of the globally noted menacing nature of covid 19, which dangerous continues to burden ageing communities.
Accordingly, Mr. Mukuka advised the Ministry of Health that as experienced retired health workers are currently in the most vulnerable age group that is susceptible to contracting covid 19, they should be engaged at consultancy level.
Mr. Mukuka implored Dr. Chilufya, a Patriotic Front (PF Mansa Central Member of Parliament in Luapula Province to re-think decision to employ retired doctors and nurses as failure to heed the ZCTU counsel would endanger lives.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mukuka has commended government for doing its best in curbing the spread of corona virus though sensitization, distribution of sanitizes, face masks, food and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE’s) for medical staff as front-line soldiers in ameliorating the burden of covid 19.
