President Edgar Lungu has urged Zambians to emulate the spirit of selflessness and unity exhibited by freedom fighters.
President Lungu says the young generation should draw lessons from the sacrifices made by the country’s founding fathers in order to make Zambia a better place.
The Head of State said this when he made a stopover at Kasama Airport this morning enroute to Chinsali for the burial of former vice president Simon Kapwepwe’s widow Salome.
And President Lungu has challenged all Zambians to reflect on their lives and embrace biblical values.
He further urged youths to strive to contribute positively to national development so as to be remembered after death.

Arrested UPND President Hakainde Hichilema has contributed 10 herds of cattle to the funeral of Salome, wife to Freedom Fighter Mwansa Kapwepwe .
Hichilema who wished the Mwansa Kapwepwe family strength while in jail also contributed assorted food items for the mourners currently gathered in Chinsali.
As at 12:00hrs yesterday, 10 herds of cattle were transported from one of HH’s ranches in Chisamba, central province to Chinsali for the mourners to feed.
And Hichilema’s vice President Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba has also contributed bags of mealie meal to the same funeral.
GBM contributed the 50 bags of mealie meal from one of his Mansa based outlets.
The two leaders have sent their messages of condolences to the bereaved Mwansa Kapwepwe family through special envoys.

The Conference of the Catholic Bishops in Zambia (ZCCB) says it has not organized any form of national prayers for the release of United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema.
ZCCB Communications Director Rev Fr. Wilfred Kunda says ZCCB is not aware of such prayer arrangements either at the Conference level or even within the Archdiocese of Lusaka.
He said ZCCB is however perturbed by the message which is being circulated especially on social media which reads ‘Catholics call for national prayer for Hichilema’s health and freedom.’
Rev. Fr Kunda said the story must have been manufactured by agents of ‘fake news’.
He said the Catholic Church has a well-organized and structured method through which it officially communicates its message to the public.
Rev Fr Kunda said if there were a move to organize such prayers, it would have been sanctioned by the Conference of Catholics Bishops (ZCCB) or by its President, His Grace Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu or by the Secretary General – Fr. Cleophas Lungu.
He said the Church continues to pray for those who request her for prayers and will always do that during mass every Sunday

Meanwhile, Patriotic Front Deputy Secretary General Mumbi Phiri has urged the Zambia Centre for Interparty Dialogue (ZCID) to lecture Hichilema to start accepting election results.
Phiri said ZCID should tutor Hichilema that Zambia existed before he was born and it will be there after his demise so there is no need for him to be difficult.
She said it is surprising that ZCID is reminding President Edgar Lungu to dialogue with UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema when the head of state has been in the forefront calling for peace, prayers and unity for the country.
Phiri wondered where ZCID was when Hichilema was saying that he does not recognize President Edgar Lungu’s leadership and when the UPND leader said there will be Armageddon if he loses the elections.

A United Nations expert Reuters Reports that Zambia’s smallholder farmers could be made squatters on their own land as the country opens up to farming multinationals in an effort to boost its economy
Hilal Elver, U.N. Special Rapporteur on the right to food, said Zambia’s ambition to develop its commercial farming sector to become “Southern Africa’s food basket” risks worsening extreme rural poverty, as farmers face eviction to make way.
Elver said she was alarmed that 40 percent of Zambian under-fives have stunted growth due to malnutrition, despite the country emerging from crisis to “impressive” levels of economic growth.
Zambia’s economy has been depressed for years by low commodity prices, mine closures, rising unemployment, power shortages and soaring food prices but the World Bank predicts 4 percent growth this year.

A twenty five -year-old woman has been jailed to 12 years imprisonment by the Kitwe High Court for stabbing her husband to death in January this year following a misunderstanding.
Justice Penjani Lamba sentenced Priscah Chabu for causing the death of Chrispine Kitungu of Wusakile township on January 14.
In passing sentence, Justice Lamba said that death caused by spouses were common in the country of late.
Chabu pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter after it was reduced from murder.
According to facts, Kitungu got back home around 19:00 hours and got into an argument with his wife, during which he is said to have called her a prostitute.
Kitungu then started packing his belongings, saying that he was going to leave the house.
Chabu dared him to go ahead, saying that it was not the first time he was threatening to do so and that he would come back.
Kitungu is said to have then grabbed Chabu on the neck and she started choking, prompting her to grab a kitchen knife which she used to stab her husband in the chest.
Chabu rushed out of the house, threw the knife into the garden and ran away.
She came back after a few minutes crying and tried to take Kitungu to hospital but he was already dead and members of the public had already informed the police about the incident.

Vice President Inonge Wina says Zambia is keen to learn some of the policies Rwanda is implementing to empower women in that country.
Vice President Wina noted that Rwanda is one of the few countries in that world that has over 50% of women in Parliament and other decision making positions which many countries should emulate.
ZANIS reports that the Vice President said this when Rwanda’s Minister of Gender and Family Promotion Esperance Nyirasafari called on her at her hotel at Radisson Blue in Kigali.
She said Zambia is eager to learn how Rwanda has managed to surpass other countries in ensuring gender equality by promoting women through involving them in developmental programs in the country.
Vice President Wina noted that Rwanda has also been a good example when it comes to women empowerment, saying Zambia wants to adopt some of that country’s policies that have worked in order to add on to the current policies Zambia is using to empower its women.

A global cyber-attack using hacking tools believed to have been created by the US National Security Agency (NSA) has infected tens of thousands of computers in nearly 100 countries.
Cyber-extortionists on Friday tricked victims into opening malicious malware attachments to spam emails that appeared to contain invoices, job offers, security warnings, and other legitimate files.
The ransomware then encrypted data on the computers, demanding payments of $300-$600 to restore access.
Researchers with security software maker Avast said they had observed 57,000 infections in 99 countries with Russia, Ukraine, and Taiwan the top targets.

On death row JW Ledford Jr’s lawyers say firing squad is the only appropriate method of execution for a condemned Georgia prisoner – even though it is not permitted under state law – because the state’s lethal injection drug could cause him to suffer more than the constitution allows, his lawyers say.
JW Ledford Jr is scheduled to be killed on Tuesday.
He was convicted of murder in the January 1992 stabbing death of his neighbour, 73-year-old Dr Harry Johnston, near his home in Murray County, in northwest Georgia.
Ledford, 45, suffers from chronic nerve pain that has been treated with increasing doses of the prescription drug gabapentin for more than a decade, his lawyers said in a federal case filed on Thursday.

Chelsea need to win the FA Cup to turn a “great season” into a “fantastic” one after clinching the Premier League title, says manager Antonio Conte.
The Blues became champions of England for a sixth time – with two games to spare – thanks to Michy Batshuayi’s late goal in a 1-0 win at West Brom.
Conte’s side face Arsenal in the FA Cup final on 27 May.
Conte, who took charge at Chelsea after leaving Italy at the end of Euro 2016, says switching to a three-man defence in the wake of a 3-0 defeat by Arsenal in September was pivotal to the Blues’ season.
Chelsea were eighth, eight points behind leaders Manchester City after that loss at Emirates Stadium. A 13-match winning streak followed, and they are now 10 points clear of their nearest challengers with two games remaining.
