International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable contributions of women in sectors including education, healthcare, business and politics. Women in Zambia have made great strides in breaking barriers and achieving excellence in their respective fields.
This year, the British High Commission was proud to welcome its first female full time High Commissioner to Zambia, Rebecca Terzeon. The High Commissioner was honoured to celebrate International Women’s Day with Zambian women, who shared their stories, experiences and aspirations for women in Zambia. Later this year, she will be joined by girls from Kamwala South, Chainda, and Foxdale schools, who will step into her shoes as ‘Ambassador for a Day’, building confidence in girls to achieve their ambitions and potential.

The United Kingdom is dedicated to supporting the rights, freedom, and potential of all women and girls in Zambia. With UK support to the Social Protection Expansion system, the Government of Zambia now provides 1.3 million households with social cash transfers, of which 75% of the beneficiaries are women and girls.
Funding through the World Bank’s project Girls Education and Women’s Empowerment and Livelihoods (GEWEL), has resulted in 173,000 girls receiving education through the Keeping Girls in School initiative, as well as the establishment of a national Gender Based Violence Call Centre.
Last year alone, the UK in partnership with UNICEF supported around 20,000 women of reproductive age to participate in community-based savings and lending groups, helping them not only to have a nutritious diverse diet, but also to grow their businesses and improve livelihoods.
