FORMER Finance Minister in the Patriotic Front (PF) Government Alexander Chikwanda has prodded Zambia youths who happen to be in the majority to be more productive and creative and help reduce poverty.
The veteran economist explained that with the population that is increasing rapidly at an average growth rate of 2.8percent, the revolution of job creation should be taken to higher level in an effort to put Zambia on road to the sought after Industrialized Country status.
Chikwanda who served in the First Zambian Republican Administration of the United National Independence Party (UNIP) led by former First Republican President Dr.Kenneth Kaunda said productivity would work well for the youths, if they equipped with requisite skills and a desirable work ethic.
“Young people should ideally be more productive and creative, in the process yielding a beneficial dividend to the nation but this is only possible and realistic if the young people are armed with requisite skills and desirable work ethics” the veteran economist urged.
Branded ABC by peers Chikwanda, a putative uncle to PF founder, the late Michael Chilufya Charles Sata and equally acknowledged as a cousin by United Party for National Development (UPND) Vice President, Dr. Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba said youths in their own right efforts should help to wedge a vigorous war against poverty with hope and expectations on one hand and a sordid reality, as mother Zambia has remained stagnant since independence, on Saturday 24th October 1964.
A forward looking Chikwanda cited countries in the South East Asia, which 50 years ago were at the same level of African countries have moved forward.
“You see South Korea in 1964 had the same gross domestic product (GDP) as Zambia and Ghana at about $3.5 billion, South Korea’s GDP is now about $1.4 trillion and Zambia is at $27 billion,” Chikwanda explained.
Seeking maximum usage of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in Zambia’s development endeavours, Chikwanda noted achievements in the ICT sphere, citing online tax payments.
Chikwanda advised that wide spread use of ICT enhance efficiency and substantially eliminate insidious and adverse human factors, hence the Patriotic Front (PF) Government increasing enhanced investments in the sector.
