By Brenda Katongola (Ms) Assistant Public Relations Manager LUSAKA CITY COUNCIL (LCC)
LUSAKA, Tuesday – In a bid encourage residents and the business community in Lusaka to Make Zambia Clean the Lusaka City Council will this Saturday, November 24, randomly give out awards to households who will be found cleaning their surroundings.
This follows the re-launch of the Keep Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy campaign by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zambia Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu on 28th April, 2018.
The Council has also declared Saturday has also been declared a “NO PLASTIC DAY” and the Council in partnership with different chain stores will give awards to some shoppers who will go to the shops with their own carrier bags.
Lusaka City Council starting this Saturday, November on 24th, which is the last Saturday of the month, in collaboration with partners who include Shoprite, Food Lovers, Choppies, Spar, Pick n’ Pay, among others, give out these awards as one way of encouraging residents to keep their surroundings clean.
The Council has been participating in different activities and also creating awareness and motivating the members of the public to own the clean-up campaign.
“It has been noticed that many people especially at household level have not fully owned the campaign. Lusaka City Council has been engaging different stakeholders to ensure that the objective of keeping Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy is achieved.”
Lusaka City Council has partnered with different stakeholders including chain stores to come up with strategies of making the city clean, green and healthy.
And LCC is working with the supermarkets in the city to help reduce the plastics given to customers at the stores. The stores will reduce the amount of plastic carrier bags given on the last Saturday of the month gradually until we have a full NO PLASTIC DAY not long from this month.
This is being done so as to raise awareness in reducing the amount of plastics in the environment.
This is to encourage the habit of going to chain stores with a reusable carrier bag hence reducing the amount of plastics in the environment.
The Lusaka City council wishes to thank all residents, companies, business houses, government institutions, schools and churches who have been participating in the keep Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Campaign.
The Council is encouraging all residents and business entities in the city of Lusaka to subscribe to solid waste and avoid illegal dumping of waste.
“Let us not relent in our efforts a Clean Green and Healthy Zambia can only be achieved if we work and continue working together.”
