UNITED National Independence Party (UNIP) President Tilyenji Kaunda has emphasized the need for Government to nationalize mines in Zambia, charging that investors have done little to empower Zambians despite reaping billions of dollars from the country’s minerals.
Speaking in an interview with Pan African Radio, Kaunda said it is unfortunate that Zambians have not benefited from mineral incomes that have however mainly benefited only western nations.
Kaunda said it is unfortunate that people that voted for the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) in 1991 were mistreated as most of them were left destitute after the privatization programme that saw many mines being sold to foreign nationals at a giveaway price.
