The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung has launched the youth leadership development programme for emerging young leaders in Zambia aimed at enhancing their leadership capacities and familiarizing them with the core values of social democracy-freedom, justice and solidarity. Speaking at the launch of the programme in Lusaka, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Resident Director Mr. Helmut Elischer said the programme will help to develop a cadre of future political and social leaders from different political persuasions and different walks of life.
Mr. Elischer said time has come for the youths in Zambia to be empowered with skills that will help them become responsible citizens.
Mr. Elischer adds: “The Youth Leadership Development programme will also provide young aspiring leaders with essential leadership skills which include cognitive skills combined with factual knowledge on issues of local and international politics and economics, increased consciousness regarding the consequences of one ‘s own actions and inactions and to promote the core values of social justice and democracy”.
The Ten-month programme will focus on core values of tolerance, openness, respect, appreciation of diversity, personal integrity, hard work and ambition and social responsibility and compassion.
The programme has drawn twenty-six participants from the ages of nineteen to thirty-four from the ruling Patriotic Front (PF), Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD), Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), United Party for National Development (UPND), National Restoration Party (NAREP), Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), Zambia Institute of Management (ZIM)and Operation Young Vote (OYV).
As a German Foundation with vast international networks, FES has developed a widely acknowledged programme towards the empowerment of youths. This programme has been running in most countries in southern Africa.
The YLDP is designed to equip youth leaders with a unique set of skills required to better fulfill their aspirations and their desired role in society. It is deliberately nonpartisan reflecting party political pluralism and pluralistic societies.
