NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s statement on passing of Kobe Bryant
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued the following statement Sunday regarding the passing of Kobe Bryant
NEW YORK, United States of America, January 27, 2020/ — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued the following statement Sunday regarding the passing of Kobe Bryant:
āThe NBA family is devastated by the tragic passing of Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna.Ā https://www.facebook.com/KPRC2/videos/2578257899160303/
āFor 20 seasons, Kobe showed us what is possible when remarkable talent blends with an absolute devotion to winning. He was one of the most extraordinary players in the history of our game with accomplishments that are legendary: five NBA championships, an NBA MVP award, 18 NBA All-Star selections, and two Olympic gold medals. But he will be remembered most for inspiring people around the world to pick up a basketball and compete to the very best of their ability. He was generous with the wisdom he acquired and saw it as his mission to share it with future generations of players, taking special delight in passing down his love of the game to Gianna.
āWe send our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Vanessa, and their family, the Lakers organization and the entire sports world.ā

Kobe Bean BryantĀ (August 23, 1978 ā January 26, 2020) was an American professionalĀ basketballĀ player.[3]Ā AĀ shooting guard, Bryant played his entire 20-year career in theĀ National Basketball AssociationĀ (NBA) with theĀ Los Angeles Lakers. He entered the NBA directly from high school and won fiveĀ NBA championships. Bryant was an 18-timeĀ All-Star, 15-time member of theĀ All-NBA Team, 12-time member of theĀ All-Defensive team, and the 2008Ā NBA Most Valuable PlayerĀ (MVP). Widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time,[4][5][6][7]Ā heĀ led the NBA in scoringĀ during two seasons, ranks fourth on the league’sĀ all-time regular season scoring, and ranks fourth on theĀ all-time postseason scoringĀ list. Bryant was the firstĀ guardĀ in NBA history to play at leastĀ 20 seasons.
Bryant was the son of former NBA playerĀ Joe Bryant. He attendedĀ Lower Merion High SchoolĀ inĀ Pennsylvania, where he was recognized as the top high-school basketball player in the country. Upon graduation, he declared for theĀ 1996 NBA draftĀ and was selected by theĀ Charlotte HornetsĀ with the 13th overall pick; the Hornets then traded him to the Lakers. As a rookie, Bryant earned himself a reputation as a high-flyer and a fan favorite by winning the 1997Ā Slam Dunk Contest, and he was named an All-Star by his second season. Despite aĀ feudĀ between the two players, Bryant andĀ Shaquille O’NealĀ led the Lakers to three consecutive NBA championships fromĀ 2000Ā toĀ 2002.
In 2003, Bryant wasĀ accused of sexual assault. The charges were dropped and a civil suit was settled out of court. After the Lakers lost theĀ 2004 NBA Finals, O’Neal wasĀ tradedĀ to theĀ Miami HeatĀ and Bryant became the cornerstone of the Lakers. He led the NBA in scoring during theĀ 2005ā06Ā andĀ 2006ā07Ā seasons. In 2006, he scored a career-high 81 points against theĀ Toronto Raptors, the secondĀ most points scored in a single gameĀ in league history behindĀ Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point gameĀ in 1962. Bryant was named the regular season’s MVP in 2008. After the Lakers lost in theĀ 2008 NBA Finals, Bryant led the team to two consecutive championships inĀ 2009Ā andĀ 2010, earning theĀ Finals MVP AwardĀ on both occasions. He continued to be among the top players in the league through 2013, when he suffered aĀ torn Achilles tendonĀ at age 34. He recovered, but suffered season-ending injuries to his knee and shoulder in the following two seasons. Citing his physical decline, Bryant retired after theĀ 2015ā16 season.
At 34 years and 104 days of age, Bryant became the youngest player in league history to reach 30,000 career points. He became the all-time leading scorer in Lakers franchise history on February 1, 2010, when he surpassedĀ Jerry West. During his third year in the league, Bryant was chosen to start the All-Star Game, and was selected to start that game for a record 18 consecutive appearances until his retirement. His fourĀ All-Star MVP AwardsĀ are tied withĀ Bob PettitĀ for the most in NBA history. At theĀ 2008Ā andĀ 2012 Summer Olympics, he wonĀ gold medalsĀ as a member of theĀ U.S. national team. In 2018, he won theĀ Academy Award for Best Animated Short FilmĀ for his filmĀ Dear Basketball.[8]
Bryant diedĀ on January 26, 2020, in aĀ helicopter crashĀ nearĀ Calabasas, California. Eight others, including his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant, were also killed.[9][10][11]Ā
