Matchday 1 of the Euros will begin on Friday 14 June and end on Tuesday 18 June. The round of fixtures opens with the hosts Germany taking on Scotland at the Allianz Arena in Group A. With Toni Kroos playing his final international tournament, it’s going to be personal for him and he’ll be hoping that he can clinch the Euros after winning the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid.
Interestingly enough, manager Carlo Ancelotti hasn’t completely closed the door on the midfield maestro’s career, saying that he can always come back if his yearning for football is too hard to resist. “Unfortunately, Kroos decided to stop, he is a German in his decisions, but he will continue living in Madrid. I told him that if he changes his stance in autumn, we start again with a call,” he said. Well, what do you think? Will Kroos really call time on his career, or might he stun with a comeback?
Another Group A clash will feature on Saturday as Hungary face off against Switzerland in Cologne, before Group B gets the attention as Spain takes on Croatia in Berlin. Italy will also begin the defence of their title as the current holders against Albania in Dortmund.
Former football manager Fabio Capello has noted that although Italy have been playing decently, they are still very much a “work in progress” ahead of the Euro 2024. “Spalletti was excellent at qualifying for the Euros and he’s tried to pass on his ideas to the team. If the players follow him and show more courage, it will be possible to dream,” he said. Do you think Italy has what it takes to win back-to-back tournaments?
And then on Sunday, Poland will take on the Netherlands in Hamburg, Slovenia will go up against Denmark in Stuttgart and England, who are regarded by many as the favourites to win this tournament, will start off their campaign in Group C against Serbia in Gelsenkirchen.
There’s a whole lot of pressure on Three Lions coach Gareth Southgate to bring the country their first major title since winning the World Cup in 1966. FA chief executive Mark Bullingham told ESPN: “Gareth has shaped a hugely positive culture in which pride in the shirt and the honour of representing England shines through. This has played a part in the transformation we have seen on the pitch in our attacking play, consistent results and strong tournament record.” Will it finally be their time?
