WHY: Lusaka’s demand for water, estimated to now be over 600,000m3 per day, significantly outstrips supply from the Kafue River and groundwater. The Kafue River is threatened by climate change, land use degradation, and abstractions from agriculture and hydropower, as well as pollution from the mining industry. Water shortages are increasingly becoming common, caused by a series of droughts and power deficits. This causes both communities and businesses to suffer.
