GOVERNANCE, Elections, Advocacy, Research Services (GEARS) Initiative Zambia Executive Director McDonald Chipenzi says it is difficult to attain an alliance when most political party leaders in Zambia are penniless and survive on hand-to-mouth.
Mr. Chipenzi has noted that the current political alliance is likely to collapse before the 2021 elections and its success is already on the edge and under a test largely due to lack of financial muscle to sustain a unit of purpose.
Mr. Chipenzi says without support to vulnerable members of the alliance in form of improved incomes, such coalitions cannot effectively cope or withstand political turbulence ahead of the 2021 Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government elections.
In an interview in Lusaka, the Governance, Elections, Advocacy, Research Services Executive Director predicted failure of existing opposition political alliances, and advised strengthening of intra-party capacity.
Mr. Chipenzi recollected absence of sustained electoral pacts as most died as soon as an election is concluded and cited the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Patriotic Front – United Liberal Party (PF-ULP).
