Zambia is increasingly supporting local music, which is taking root following a passion to accompany compositions with inspirational videos.
Before this dawn of videos one can equally attribute Zambian interest in local music to a policy initiated by former First Republican President, Dr. Kenneth David Buchizya Kaunda’s United National Independence Party (UNIP) Government (Saturday October 24th 1964-October 31st 1991) which encouraged Zambia Broadcasting Services (ZBS) now renamed Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) to reserve 90 (ninety) per cent airtime or airplay to local songs.
This inspiration saw the growth of legendary groups such as late Paul “bauze” Ngozi late Chris Chali’s “The Amayenge, The Cross Bones, The Witch and late Lazarous Tembo, who later became Minister of State or Deputy Minister appointed by the indefatigable KK.
KK’s son Masuzyo Kaunda, was actually a good guitarists and had a couple of friends residing in New Chilenje Township, near Timothy Mwanakatwe road.
Just as is or was the case with Jennifer Hudson’s Dream Girls hit, local musicians from Maiko Zulu, Daptusa Nkhata aka Sista D,
The Sakala Brothers-Moses and Levy, Angela Nyirenda and Maureen Lupo
Lilanda, budding artistes (countrywide-Zambia) are falling over each other’s shoes producing excellent videos, which tend to transform their individual compositions into immediate ‘Hits and not Misses!!!
Interestingly, Journalists Against Piracy in Zambia (JAPIZ) Treasurer Francis Lungu acknowledges the imperative need for Zambian artistes to maximize their incredible potential as music producers through production of accompanying videos.
“It is better for our Zambian artistes to continue building this enterprise through production of videos. I believe that videos improve an artiste’s ability to choreography skills and in time, makes stage or live performances become better,” an optimistic Lungu advised.
