As the world grapples with increased sophistication in cyber crimes, solutions are being sought to curb the vice by technology experts who gathered in Moscow, Russia for two weeks during the Positive Hack Camp, reports FRANCIS LUNGU.
Positive Technologies, a Russian firm with support from the Ministry of Digital Development, organized an international educational project dubbed “Positive Hack Camp” that attracted about 70 young participants from around the world to learn on how to detect and address cyber crimes.
The two-week Positive Hack Camp just wrapped up on Friday, August 23, 2024 in Moscow.
The event brought together around 70 young professionals from 20 countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman, Bahrain, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, among others.
Over the course of two weeks, cybersecurity specialists from around the world gained insights from leading Russian experts, who shared their hands-on experience in cybersecurity and Information Technology (IT) infrastructure protection.
Furthermore, Positive Technologies and SGU University announced the start of a collaboration focused on training cybersecurity professionals in Indonesia.
Tumiso Monareng, is a student from South Africa who had an opportunity to be part of the Positive Hack Camp in Moscow.
She shares that South Africa is rated among the top six countries in cyber security problems, but she hopes to use the knowledge acquired at the Positive Hack Camp to contribute in reducing cyber crimes in her country.
“I have benefitted a lot because I got an opportunity to learn more…at my school we do more of theoretical part of it, so I got an opportunity to do more of the practical part of cyber security and I have gained a lot of experience,” said Monareng at the closing ceremony of the Positive Hack Camp in Moscow.
From Senegal, Ameth Diop participated at the Positive Hack Camp and describes the experience as benefitial.
According to Diop’s estimates, Africa looses US$5billion annually due to cyber crimes.
“It is benefitial for me…I have learnt the method of hacking…I will help my country to know more about cyber security,” said Diop.
In Zambia for instance, the government in 2021 enacted the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act providing for cyber security in the country.
The Act among other things provide for the protection of persons against cyber crime, child online protection, facilitate identification, declaration and protection of critical information infrastructure. It also provide for the collection of and preservation of evidence of computer and network related crime.
