TIMES Media Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sam Phiri counsels Zambian artists (sculptures) and artistes (performing art) not to loosely share ideas until such products are readily available to be rolled out.
Mr. Phiri says he has an idea on how to circulate millions of newspapers every day but will only share once ready to implement this thought, pointing out that for now he is keeping it close to his chest as is possible on account of fear of this intellectual property right being stolen.
Phiri, an entertaining and business journalist in Zambia’s Capital City of Lusaka says movie producers must clearing state the duration of promotions so as to distinguish when free access to a production can clearly be deemed as intellectual theft.
“I can tell you that I have an idea on how to successfully circulate millions of copies of a daily newspaper but until I am ready, I will keep it as a closely guarded secret in my chest,” Phiri told a Partners Against Piracy (PAP) Piracy Conversations: ‘The Fight Against Piracy: The Role of Regulatory Bodies‘, on Wednesday, 14th February 2024 at the Southern Sun Ridgeway Hotel, Church Road, Lusaka.
Discussants were Kenneth Musamvu of Patents and Company Registration Agency (PACRA), Zambia Police, Zambia National Broadcasting Services (ZNBC) and Zambian Music Copyright Protection Society (ZAMCOPS).
National Arts Council of Zambia (NAC) Literary Performing Arts – Assistant Director, Ms. Mwiche Chikungu, Multichoice Zambia Head of Marketing, Mukuka Mulenga spoke on the ‘Step -Up Campaign‘, with a video shown on ‘Untelling Our Stories‘ during piracy conversations anchored by Chimweka Chileshe.
PACRA Copyright Administrator Musamvu, updated the session that the institution is developing a bill that will address piracy in the digital space such as unauthorised reproduction, illegal streaming and downloading of content.
ZAMCOPS General Manager Mirrias Siamutondo advised creators of content to draw a line between pirating their own content and promoting it.
ZNBC Head of Content Acquisitions Kalumba Lumpa courted stakeholders to ensure content submitted for airing is certified by authorities.
ZPS Lusaka Division Officer-in-Charge Intellectual Property Unit Superintendent Mulolani Belinda wants citizens to report suspected piracy as failure to do so weaken a zero tolerance to intellectual property theft.
PAP is a collaborative initiative between government agencies, law enforcement agencies, distributors, content creators and rights owners that seek to inform and educate the public about the effects of piracy.
PAP’s goal is to raise awareness on effects of piracy and to direct resources toward nipping intelectual (content( theft in Zambia.
The interaction at Southern Sun Hotel at the intersection of Lusaka’s Independence Avenue and Church Road attracted the media, artistes, artists, producers and filmmakers.-
