Green Economy and Environment Minister Collins Nzovu took a four-day-working visit to Ndola, Copperbelt Province touring forest reserves to appreciate the extent of damage made to mother nature and deforestation through the indiscriminate cutting down of trees leading to.
Meanwhile, WeForest Country Director Dr. Mathias De Beenhouwer says his team has been active in Zambia since 2011 initially in Kitwe before expanding to Luanshya, Masaiti, Mpongwe, Lavushi Manda and Mafinga districts.
Flanked by Masaiti Council Chairperson Andrew Lumano and District Commissioner Ennie Matutu, Mr. Nzovu visited a 4,500 hectares Katanino Forest Reserve hit by uncontrolled charcoal burning, but luckily, WeForest Zambia Limited a non-governmental organization came to aid and plight of mother nature through a restoration.
Nzovu was beaming with joy has he remained eager to learn how WeForest Zambia with the help of the locals had managed to restore the lost plight and thicket of the once natural Katanino Forest Reserve.
A determined Nzovu restated Government’s dialogue with people fighting deforestation as society can still survive away from charcoal burning that is promoting deforestation resulting in unpredictable weather patterns.
” I must say I am impressed with the works that you are doing here”, delighted Nzovu said as he commissioning a fully furnished waterborne Main Office Block, serviced by solar power costing K1,696,200.00 wholly-funded by WeForest Zambia Limited.
Outlining Katanino project’s 10 year project since 2019Dr Mathias said 368 farmers possessing 2,200 beehives for honey production, 30 female headed households in the mishroom production, 168 households through chicken rearing, 127 farmer have equally been supported with farming inputs.
Eight (8) officers are in permanent employment with 80 households engaged on regular piece work arrangement.
