YOUNG people in Zambia have been encouraged to build interest in pursuing sciences if the country is to achieve meaningful development.
8th Texila Knowledge Talk Series in commemoration of the Mole Day, Senior Lecturer at University of Zambia in the Department of Chemistry, Onesmus Munyati
Speaking at the 8th Texila Knowledge Talk Series in commemoration of the Mole Day, Senior Lecturer at University of Zambia in the Department of Chemistry, Onesmus Munyati, said a good perception of science is important especially among females.
During a Thursday October 23rd, 2018 presentation, Dr. Munyati said that there is need for students to embrace sciences and contribute to science development.
“The mindset that sciences are hard is what makes young people, especially females shy away from the study. But when perception is changed, much more can be achieved,” Dr. Munyati said.
Dr. Munyati called on Texila American University students, institutions and stakeholders to collaborate for strides to be made in the science industry in an Expert Lecture on Nanotechnology’ a presentation appreciated by participant in the auditorium.

Speaking at the same event, Texila American University Zambia Dean of Medicine, Dr. Elliot Kafumukache said that sciences, including Chemistry, should not be looked upon as hard.
Dr. Kafumukache added that young minds need to think ahead and get interest in studying sciences because the nation needs their fresh ideas. He also stressed the need for collaboration among key stakeholders.
“Chemistry is not exclusive. It cuts across several studies including engineering, medicine, pharmacy. That is why industry players should collaborate and work closely if meaningful scientific development is to be achieved,” Dr. Kafumukache said.

In his Vote of Thanks, Texila American University Zambia Head of Health Foundation Programme, Professor Dr. Sunil Verma said the commemoration of the Mole Day was arrived at in order to encourage students at the university and young people in general to build an interest in Chemistry.
“Chemistry is not hard (tough or difficult). I hope that this event has helped motivate you to take the subject seriously,” Professor Dr. Sunil Verma encouraged prospective students of Chemistry.
Mole Day is an unofficial ‘Holiday’ celebrated among chemists, chemistry students and chemistry enthusiasts on October 23, between 6:02 a.m. and 6:02 p.m.
The time and date are derived from Avogadro’s number, which is approximately 6.02 × 1023, defining the number of particles (atoms or molecules) in one mole (mol) of substance, one of the seven base SI units.
