An organisation formed and led by some University of Zambia students known as “She inspires” donated assorted items to the underprivileged Mazyopa Township people in Lusaka’s Munali Constituency on Saturday 19th August 2017.

Mandevu Constituency is under the jurisdiction of Member of Parliament (MP) Ms. Jean Kapata, who is Land and Natural Resources Minister.

“She inspires” founder Musanje Maggie Bukowa, a third year student of media and communication studies said the organisation was moved by the main challenges faced by the underprivileged people in Mazyopa Township and was compelled to help out through donating some domestic items.

Ms. Bukowa stated that her organisation whose major goal is to fight against teenage pregnancies that lead to high number of school drop outs, will continue reaching out to the underprivileged persons in society.

Ms. Bukowa has since appealed to people with resourceful technical and monetary ability to partner with ‘She Inspires’ in fighting teenage pregnancies and reaching out to the needy in Zambian society.

Preaching strength found in numbers, ‘She Inspires’ Secretary Ms. Selia Jere called for more collaboration with like-minded public and private sector groups and individuals in the fight against teenage pregnancies and early marriages.

“Our prayer as ‘She Inspires’ is for more collaboration in the fight against teenage pregnancies and early marriages in peri-urban and rural areas, which carrying the brunt of this reproductive health burden,” pleaded Ms. Jere.

Meanwhile, University of Zambia Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Enala Mwase who is the matron of the organisation urged the students who made donations to the underprivileged in Mazyopa through She inspires, to continue with the practice of helping the needy in society.

Professor Mwase is elated that the ‘She Inspires’ initiative by UNZA students is portraying the UNZA Great East Road learning institution in a positive way as opposed to the negative image associated to stone throwing built by coverage of students’ protests by electronic and print media outlets.

“The few things that happen at the University of Zambia that damage our image are what is known to the public but through this activity which is very rare actuality, people do not know that students are goodwill ambassadors.

This is why I would have really loved to witness as much publicity, so that people know that UNZA students are not only stone throwers, but have a good heart as large as a watermelon for the community,”

Professor Mwase wished better portrayal of philanthropy by UNZA students.

And the jubilant recipients commended ‘She Inspires’ for extending a hand toward an excluded community.

One of the recipients Peter Mulenga expressed heartfelt gratitude to students involved in ‘She Inspires’ for the ‘Good Samaritan’ gesture.

And Mazyopa Township Chairperson Frederick Sinyangwe thanked the students for choosing his area as recipients of ‘She Inspires’ humanitarian donation.

A delighted Mr. Sinyangwe appealed to ‘She inspires’ advocates to conduct more interactive discussions with girls in the area on the importance of education.

Sinyangwe regretted that the Mazyopa Township has continued to record high statistics of school drop outs due to teenage pregnancies.

Zambian Media Taskforce on Ending Child Marriages and the Zambian Children Young People and Women in Development (ZCYPWD) applauded ‘She Inspires’ mentored by Professor Mwase for empowering vulnerable people in Zambia.

“This is a commendable initiative, which deserves support as education is an equaliser that will guarantee sustainable livelihood among vulnerable communities,” said Derrick Sinjela a representative of the Zambian Media Tasforce on Ending Child Marriages and ZCYPWD.

Ms. Chileshe Kakoma have been courting traditional authorities like Chief Chamuka in the Central Province on the need to discourage early pregnancies and marriages.

Further, inline with the 2013 East and Central African (ESA) Commitment, Education Minister and Health Minister Dr. Chitalu Chilufya are resolved toward actualising the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s), especially Goal 1: Ending Poverty, Goal 2: Ending Hunger, Goal 3: Ensuring Healthy lives for all, Goal 4: Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all and Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
