Win medals, Fairy Bottling CEO urges Zambian boxers

Fairy Bottling Chief Executive Officer Mohamed El Sahili, has urged the two Zambian Boxers Mbachi Kaonga and Nkumbu Silungwe who recently qualified for the 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championship in Hamburg, Germany to return home with medals.

Speaking when he presented air tickets valued at K50, 000 to the Zambia Boxing Federation (ZBF) at his office on Friday 18^th August, 2017 Sahili, disclosed that it was part of his company’s social corporate responsibility to support the boxers knowing that they recently performed well during the 2017 African Championship recently hosted in Congo Brazzaville.

Sahili, said his company which is the makers of Aqua savanna Mineral water is considering a long term partnership with the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) to contribute to the enhancement of performance by the top athletes.

“What encouraged us to support these two champions is the fact that they have done very well. And they just needed support to go to Hamburg. We believe that there are already stars by what they achieved at the African Championships. The only thing that I am asking for from our two boxers is that at least one of them brings a medal back home” he said.

And Zambia Boxing Federation (ZBF) President Kennedy Mubita, said he was enthralled with the sponsorship which Fairy Bottling has done to his association through the support of the purchase of air tickets for the boxers and coaches. He appealed to other companies to emulate what Fairy Bottling has done adding that this will be the only way to motivate boxers to be focused and mint medals.

“When the OYDC director called me that he had found someone willing to support us I was happy. I am so grateful to Fairy Bottling, it was going to be sad if we had failed to send our boxers to the World Championship. My word to the boxers will be let them concentrate as the championship will be competitive in Hamburg”, Mubita said.

Meanwhile, Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) Director Clement Chileshe, says the Centre remains committed to support and develop athletes by camping them at the Multi -Sports facility before competition.

Chileshe, said it has been painful to see athletes train and fail to travel for competitions due to inadequate resources hence denying them important international competition exposure and competitive platforms.

He said what Fairy Bottling has done is commendable and should encourage others to support athletes stating that it will also increase the number of medals being minted.

“We are hopeful that this kind of support from Fairy Bottling, NOCZ, Government and other stakeholders , the country will continue to be on its rise towards international sports performances and see that more medals are brought back home” Chileshe said.

The two Zambian Boxers qualified for the World Championship after participating in the AFBC African Confederation Boxing Championship in Congo, Brazzaville.

And Mbachi Kaonga, a boxer thanked Fairy Bottling for the tickets and assured the sponsor that he will work hard to bring honors to the country.

Their camping at the Olympic Youth Development Centre has been supported by the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Child Development through the Podium Performance Programme and the Olympic Youth Development Centres.
