THE Zambia Association of Children with Disabilities (ZACD) has noted that parents blessed with children born with disability face challenges of stigmatization and discrimination.
According to ZACD Committee Member Astridah Kaunda said 50 percent of parents and guardians of children born with disabilities faced the challenging prospect of divorce as men blamed their wives for the disability of their child.
“Parents and guardians of children born with disabilities face a lot of challenges like stigmatization and discrimination in society. In a home, a man blames a wife for having a child with disability” Kaunda lamented.
Kaunda said ZAPDCs mandate is to advocate for parents taking care of children born with disabilities.
She said most parents who have children with disabilities face challenges of acceptance they live in denial and conclude like ‘Danny Siulapwa that they are indeed cursed.
“Unemployment is another challenge because parents spend most of the time at home looking after a child with a disability and it is expensive to find school place for a child with disability and parents are given wrong advice.
Kaunda argued that in schools some teachers encourage able-bodied pupils not to stigmatize children with disabilities.
