PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday 21ST MARCH, 2017 LUSAKA

We would like to commend SADC leaders who recently convened in Swaziland
for the extra ordinary summit for approving the action plan on industrialisation
strategy and road map 2015-2063 as this will spur development.
The head of states agreement to improve coordination and collaboration efforts
to promote a harmonised approach in the management of army is also a sign
that the leaders are concerned with the welfare of their people.
As BSLT, we propose to President Lungu to pass a directive to either the
ministry of national development or ministry of youth to create a special
department that will promote, monitor and ensure the SDGs are effectively
implemented to spur development. This will complement the action plan on
industrialisation and spur development.
It is also worth noting that our population as a nation is predominantly youth
and the formulation of this new department should find effective means of
developing this nation around youths. The button of leadership should slowly
and carefully be passed to young people. The creation of this new department
should be treated as an urgent matter.
For instance, the move by government to increase mathematics and sciences
teachers in schools is welcome. With the fast improving technological world,
we feel this will better equip the future generation to compete effectively in the
technological world. This will serve as a driving base of creating manufacturing
plants that will create jobs.
Furthermore, government and other interested stakeholders should consider
investing in community computer labs and libraries to meet the demands of
people in rural areas. This is one area our organization has prioritized. We urge
area Members of Parliament in various constituencies to consider this as an
educational community investment. It is the responsibility of MPs to issue
people sample 21st century opportunities by creating such progressive
platforms.
Such investment should not be done without putting into consideration children
and women’s needs. As a nation we need to begin building a strong foundation
for our children and accelerate efforts to empower women. The call for
community computer labs and libraries will be a foundation for grassroots
development programs. This will also put the nation on course in achieving
SDG Number Four (4) which applies to quality and affordable education.
Our nation should unite efforts in ensuring that our children have an equal
chance to compete favourably on the world market by 2030. It is therefore
important to prioritise SDGs that mostly affect us.
