Lusaka Zambia – The rapid resurgence of Rugby 7s in Zambia has been commended by sponsor Paratus Telecom for building national unity and encouraging team-building, tactics, speed, strength, determination and discipline.
“Rugby 7s is a source of pride for our nation and it is pleasing that from a young age children – both boys and girls – are beginning to be introduced to it and play it,” said Marius van Vuuren, Country Manager of the connectivity solutions provider, which is part of the Paratus Telecom Group,
He was speaking during the unveiling of the national team kit in Lusaka this week, attended by Zambia Rugby Union President General Clement Sinkamba.
Zambia’s relaunched Rugby 7s Championship will see various local and international teams taking part in tournaments throughout the year.
In thanking the partners and organisers of the event, Mr van Vuuren urged more sponsors to come on board, called for fans to support the team and urged players to stay fit, train and ensure they win matches.
“If we can bring all three of those elements together, then I hope to be standing here again this time next year as a proud sponsor of a team that has put Zambia Rugby 7s back on the international map,” he said.
In offering words of advice to the team, Mr van Vuuren said: “According to Rugby World, speed is the most important physical quality you need to succeed in rugby sevens. Strength may get all the accolades but speed is the true physical ability that separates great players from average players.
“Paratus believes in both speed and strength, which is one of the reasons we have pitched in to sponsor the Zambia Rugby 7s. It’s a sport that resonates with us, and exemplifies our approach to team-building, tactics, speed, strength, determination and discipline.”
Rugby 7s is a championship played on a full-size pitch by teams of seven players as opposed to 15-a-side rugby. The game is shorter in duration than the other formats, with each half lasting seven minutes.
The sponsorship of the Rugby 7s championship comes as Paratus Telecom Zambia celebrates its 7th anniversary. The Paratus Group entered Zambia in 2010 and rapidly established itself as the go-to provider for connectivity, hosting and data security solutions; capitalising on its international expertise and infrastructure to deliver the best services locally with the local touch.
