The Zambian government has ramped up efforts to combat a deadly outbreak of Heartwater disease, a tick-borne illness that has killed 102 cattle in Gwembe District, Southern Province.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock confirmed 202 cases since 15th January 2025, with the most severe impact in Kota Kota under Chipepo Veterinary Camp.
Laboratory tests identified *Cowdria Ruminantium* as the cause, with the current rainy season exacerbating tick proliferation.
Farmers, particularly those under traditional systems, are urged to adopt weekly livestock dipping and improved management practices to curb the spread.
“Disease prevention and control is a collective effort,” said Benny Munyama, Principal Public Relations Officer for the Ministry.
“We urge farmers to report suspected cases promptly and follow recommended measures to protect Zambia’s livestock industry.” he stated.
The government has initiated farmer sensitization, case monitoring, and early treatment programs to mitigate the outbreak’s impact on livelihoods.
