The Tobacco Control Consortium of Zambia TCCZ has alleged that a few elements in the country’s Cabinet are still dancing to the tune of the Tobacco Industry’s morbid song, which pitches perceived profit over public health.
TCCZ Acting Chairperson Albert Phiri made the remarks during the commemoration of World No Tobacco Day that is observed annually on May 31st and whose 2024 theme was “Protecting children from tobacco industry interference”.
Mr. Phiri alleged that despite the fact that global tobacco companies have pledged not to advertise tobacco products to minors in their ethical guidelines, a significant number of kiosks selling their merchandise are deliberately positioned in close proximity to schools across Zambia.
He revealed that studies show that tobacco advertising and sales around schools affects children’s attitudes about tobacco and encourages them to smoke.
He said that it is imperative that the government fulfills its duty of care to protect its citizens, especially the younger generation, from the clutches of tobacco addiction designed by the Tobacco Industry.
Meanwhile, Center for Trade Policy Development CTPD Acting Executive Director Natalie Kunda noted that tobacco use kills over 7,000 people and costs Zambia an estimated K2.8 billion annually in treating tobacco related illnesses.
Ms. Kunda said that raising awareness and educating the young people about the dangers of tobacco is a significant step towards ensuring a healthier future for them and for the communities.
She was speaking at a football tournament sponsored by the Tax Justice Network Africa and the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids CTFK.
