Schools must be places of safety away from homes – MoE PS-TS Joel Kamoko

MINISTRY of Education (MoE) Permanent Secretary (PS) for Technical Services, Joel Kamoko, says schools must be places of safety away from homes to ensure that the development of learners is holistic.
Mr Kamoko said the United Party for National Development (UPND) Alliance New Dawn Administration is determined more than ever before to curtail School Related Gender Based Violence (SRGBV) in society with the requisite agency and corresponding commitment from the highest level of government.
Kamoko reiterated Government’s Zero tolerance to SRGBV and will take all necessary steps to guarantee the safety of children in school, on their way to school and in the homes where they come from.
“For us to ensure that the development of learners is holistic, it is important to ensure that schools are places of safety away from homes. This government declares Zero tolerance to School Related Gender Based Violence and will take all necessary steps to guarantee the safety of children in school, on their way to school and in the homes where children come from,” assured Kamoko.
Officially opening the ongoing Zambia Education Enhancement Project (ZEEP) and Keeping Girls in School (KGS) Initiative with support from World Bank as part of the Joint Action Plan for SRGBV and focuses on building leadership capacity in SRGBV and GBV in education High Level Workshop at Chaminuka Lodge on Tuesday 7th December, 2021,
Kamoko told delegates that addition to schools being centres of learning, the Ministry of Education wants to make schools centres of positive cultural transformation so that the development of learners is holistic and whole rounded covering all critical spheres of human development that include the cognitive dimension, the affective dimension and the psychomotor dimension.
“There is compelling evidence that if left to chance, the safety of children in schools is not guaranteed from being harmed,” admonished Kamoko.
