The Integrated Community Anti-Litter Initiative Chairperson Pascal Chikumbi is urging the newly approved members of Lusaka Solid Waste Management Utility (LSWMU) board to initiate policies promoting waste value addition through establishment of large scale recycling companies.
Mr. Chikumbi said that the gesture to establish large scale recycling firms will change the city’s current status of uncollected garbage to clean green and healthy.
During its third meeting cabinet, considered and approved the appointment of a nine member team of LSWMU board following the enactment of a Solid Waste Management and Regulation Act of 2018 and the establishment of the Lusaka Solid Waste Management Utility Company (LSWMUC).
Welcoming the development, Chikumbi believes the Cabinet decision will help to reduce pressure on Lusaka City Council ((LCC) which has been grabbling with effective waste management.
“The board is timely and I hope this initiative will be extended to other densely populated cities with similar challenges such as Ndola in the Copperbelt Province,” advised Chikumbi.
