LUSAKA, 7th FEBRUARY, 2017 –
DECISIONS ON ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENTS The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) wishes to inform stakeholders, partners and the general public that during the month of January 2017, a total of 38 Environmental Impact Assessment (EIAs) reports were considered from various developers across the country.
This was in accordance with the Environmental Management Act (EMA) No. 12 of 2011 as read with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations, Statutory Instrument No. 28 of 1997. Of the 38 projects considered, 21 were approved, 14 deferred and two were rejected.
These decisions were based on information provided by applicants, findings from site verification inspections and input from other regulatory and authorising agencies across respective sectors.
Deferments were made pending submission of additional information by affected developers as well as the need for further consultations with concerned stakeholders.

The Agency continues to monitor all industries to ensure environmental and social concerns are fully incorporated into their overall operational regimes in accordance with environmental laws and regulations. Projects are therefore approved subject to specific conditions within a given timeframe.
ZEMA’s decision can be withdrawn without notice should a developer fail to comply with laid down conditions and commitments.
