NATIONAL PENSION SCHEME AUTHORITYWORKERS ELIGIBLE TO CONTRIBUTE TO NAPSA
The National Pension Scheme Authority wishes to remind employers and payroll vendors/bureaus that membership to NAPSA is mandatory for all workers aged 16 to 65 year old. Employers are accordingly required to effect statutory NAPSA monthly deductions from all employees within the stated age category from the month of engagement and not when the worker is confirmed.
Further note that for NAPSA purposes the term employee has a broader definition and includes the listed forms of employment and workers:
· Permanent and pensionable employment
· Fixed term Contract.
· Part time employment.
· Foreigner or expatriate employees.
· Casual/Non-permanent employment
· Internship/Apprenticeship
· Probation
· Commissioned based employment such as Direct Sales Agents.
· Domestic/Household related employees such as Maids, Nannies, and Gardeners etc.
Employees aged above 55 years old that have claimed a NAPSA benefit are however exempt from making monthly contributions.
Employers are particularly advised to ensure that their payroll systems are aligned to the National Pensions Scheme Act by retaining on payroll and effecting NAPSA monthly deductions for workers that have attained age 55 but have not claimed a NAPSA benefit as well as complying with the other aspects of the law as indicated above.
