Disabled Children deserve support, insists ZCYPWD

CHILD Rights Activists have restated a need for global society to embrace disabled persons as their physical status is not a choice. Activists reiterated during a Easter Saturday 4th April 2015 Pan African Radio 105.1FM Zambian Children and Young People and Women in Development (ZCYPWD) that time had come for society to appreciate disabled persons as people differently abled.
During the interactive programme Zambian Children and Young People and Women in Development, the panel and callers emphasised that disability must not be regarded as inability to contribute to personal, national and international progress.
The Zambian Children and Young People and Women in Development, is aired every Saturday between 10:00 hours and 11:00 hours on Pan African Radio 105.1FM whose tagline is ‘All People, Proud and Free’, and discussed issues concerning disabled persons and children in the Zambian society.
Issues such as the creation of more schools and disability friendly facilities that will help improve the lives of the disabled persons were raised.

Maxwell Simbuwa, a member of the Media Network for Child Rights and Development (MNCRD) encouraged the panel and listeners not to call these people as “disabled” as this brings about some sought of discrimination.
The children and young people urged the general public and stakeholders to support entrepreneurship among disabled persons by marketing and purchasing their products and services. “We must all start promoting their business by buying of locally produced goods,as this will help sustain their business and hence disabled persons will not have a reason to go to the streets to beg or ask for alms,” Maxwell Simbuwa, a Grade Eight pupil at Woodlands A School in Lusaka advised.
A Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Peer Educator Vanessa Mwenya pleaded with parents and guardians of differently abled children to integrate their siblings in society as locking these innocent souls was not a solution.
“Parents must not hide their children from society by keeping them indoors as this will not help them understand their abilities as they socialize with other children in future,” Vanessa Fab Mwenya observed.
Mr Sydney Muponda ,who is a motivational speaker and author of GETTING A JOB YOU WANT’ making a maiden appearance on ZCYPWD equally expressed regret that global society continues to neglect and stigmatise children and disabled persons.
Mr Muponda urged differently abled persons to use their skills and talents to better their lives unlike doing nothing.
