Energy Minister Peter Chibwe Kapala has announced a $300 million project to connect Zambia and Tanzania with an interconnector line, enabling the export of excess power from Tanzania.
Currently, Zambia faces a 195MW power deficit, with only 200MW being recorded.
Ndola Energy is set to add 105MW, and the private sector will be sought to bridge the remaining gap.
Once completed, the project will power various industries.
During a Monday 17th June 2024 Press Conference held jointly with Chief Government Spokesperson, Mr. Cornelius Mweetwa, Mr. Kapala clarified that $80 million is the remaining balance needed to complete the project, not the total cost.
The World Bank-funded project, known as the Zambia-Tanzania-Kenya interconnector, is expected to be completed soon.
This will enable Zambia to access excess power from Tanzania, reducing the current shortfall.
The Zambian Energy Minister assured that the project will be concluded soon, and the private sector will be involved to bring in the remaining balance.
The project’s total cost is approximately $300 million, with $80 million being the remaining balance.
Once completed, the project will benefit various industries and alleviate the power shortage.
