ZAMBIA ON COURSE TO DOUBLE COTTON YIELDS THROUGH THE CLIMATE SMART INITIATIVE
A Cotton Breeder based at Cotton Development Trust in Mazabuka Martin Simasiku says the country is course to increase the small cotton holder yields through the Climate Smart Initiative (CSI).
Zambia is implementing a project dubbed “climate smart initiative” for doubling seed cotton yields of small holder cotton farmers in Zambia.
The initiative is tailored towards enhancing the seed cotton yields of small holder cotton farmers in Zambia.
Mr. Simasiku explains that the objective of the project is to double the seed cotton yields from the current three hundred (300) to five hundred (500) kilogrammes per hectar to about one (1) tonne per hectar.
Zambia is participating in 2022 World Cotton Research Conference in Cairo, Egypt running from Tuesday 4th to Friday, 7th October, 2022.
The conference is organised by international cotton researchers association and Zambia is chairing the “climate smart initiative and crop management sessions.
And Mr. Simasiku says such engagements will enhance zambia’s collaborations with other stakeholders in the cotton industry.
Meanwhile, Simasiku is set to join representatives from other African countries to celebrate the international cotton day in Egypt.
