*KINSHASA, Wednesday, October 5th, 2022* – THE 27TH Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP-27) will be held from 6th to 18th November, 2022, in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt.
And Zambia, as the Chair of the African Group of Negotiators (AGN), has continued with preparations for COP-27 and ensuring that the African Group is ready for the Conference.
Minister of Green Economy and Environment Honourable Collins Nzovu announced the development when he held a bilateral meeting with COP-27 President His Excellency Sameh Shoukry on the margins of the PreCOP-27 Meeting of Ministers in Kinshasa, DRC.
Hon Nzovu said Zambia facilitated the preparation of the African Common Position which was presented at the African Ministerial Conference on Environment (AMCEN) held in Dakar, Senegal from 12th to 16th September, 2022.
He said AMCEN highlighted the importance of the forthcoming COP-27 which should focus on the effective implementation of the Paris Agreement.
He informed Mr Shoukry that Member states agreed to work towards the unity of the African Group and speak with one voice at COP 27.
“Ministers pledged full support to the Arab Republic of Egypt as the in-coming Presidency of COP-27 and committed to work for a successful and ambitious COP-27 outcomes,” the honourable minister said.
Hon Nzovu explained that AMCEN emphasized that COP27, taking place on African soil, needs to deliver substantive progress on the priority issues for Africa and other developing countries.
He said the meeting also welcomed the African Union Climate Change and Resilient Development Strategy and Action Plan as the overarching framework to foster coherence in addressing climate change on the continent.
The minister said Zambia also participated at the International Cooperation Forum for African Ministers of Finance, Economy and Environment held in Cairo, Egypt.
“On the side-lines of that meeting, I held a bilateral meeting with the Egyptian Minister of Environment Dr. Yasmine Fouad, where I expressed the need for enhanced communication and collaboration at the level of Ministers before, during and after COP-27,” he said.
He said Zambia also participated in the recently held International Cooperation Forum for African Ministers of Finance, Economy and Environment held from 7th to 9th September, 2022, in Cairo, Egypt.
“Zambia continues to pledge its full support to the Arab Republic of Egypt during the country’s COP-27 Presidency and we will ensure that we collectively successfully deliver the African COP,” the honourable minster assured.
