Did you know Prince Philip is expected to be buried alongside his beloved wife, Queen Elizabeth II, having been temporarily interred in the Royal Vault until her death?
Queen Elizabeth II’s husband Prince Philip passed away in April last year, with a funeral held in the same month. However, instead of being buried immediately, the late Duke of Edinburgh’s body was interred in a special royal vault so that he could be laid to rest alongside his wife after her death.
The rarely seen Royal Vault is located beneath St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, and is nearly 200 years old. Built between 1804 and 1810 for King George III, the secret burial chamber has housed the bodies of multiple members of the Royal Family over the years, including several monarchs.
During his funeral on April 17 2021, Prince Philip’s casket was lowered into the vault below via an electric lift and has remained there to this day. But following The Queen’s death on Thursday September 8 his body is expected to be moved in line with interment protocols decided on in advance.
Married for 73 years, the royal pair will be reunited following Her Majesty’s state funeral on Monday September 19, when her coffin will be brought from Westminster Abbey to St George’s Chapel for a private funeral service for family members. Both The Queen and Philip’s final resting places will be in the King George VI Memorial Chapel, a small chapel within St George’s that is close to the Royal Vault.
The Queen Mother and Queen Elizabeth’s father George VI are both interred in the same location, as are the ashes of her younger sister Princess Margaret, who died in 2002. Gothic church St George’s is also the venue where Prince Harry married Meghan Markle in 2018.
The first royal to be placed in the Royal Vault was Princess Amelia in 1810, King George III’s youngest daughter. Prince Philip’s mother Princess Alice, meanwhile, was the last person to be interred there before him – though she was later removed to a tomb in Jerusalem in accordance with her wishes.
