Statement by Operation Young Vote (OYV) on The Alleged Censored/Cooked Information on Status of Covid 19

It is quite sad and appalling to note that leaders and specifically those from government have opted to give Zambians incomplete information on the status of Zambia and Zambians regarding the deadly Covid 19 epidemic. The fact that the Minister of Health and the government generally chooses to censor information given to the nation on a matter of life and death is vexing, as we heard on the live streaming on facebook. This is not only a confirmation of our leaders irresponsibility but also an indication that they are ready to keep everyone in the dark while they careless that is if they do care at all.

Should we honestly continue believing the numbers government through the Minister of Health is giving us as updates – NO – unless we are fools. This behavior by our leaders is total politicization of the epidemic and should not be condoned.  It should be stopped henceforth.

As young people in the country, we now note without any aorta of doubt that we have a government that is not ready to be open and truthful to its citizens so as to make everyone appreciate the gravity of the challenge. True leaders in other parts of the world have voluntarily come out in the open declaring their positive status of Covid 19 to the public. One of the key messages that we all need to preach about the Coronavirus epidemic is that everyone is a potential carrier and that each one of the citizens must be very alert as we deal with one another in whatever form or business.

We must tell the Minister of Health and government that they have no right whatsoever of putting our precious lives at risk of the epidemic by telling us cooked information on the status. This is total failure. This should have been a point of Zambians sympathizing with this government including on many other things it has failed but alas, due to always wanting to scheme against its own people – even on global epidemic the government sees an opportunity. This is not only chaotic but also shameful.

This behavior of censoring information even in calamities such as Covid 19 is unchristian. How do we as a people/country offer our prayers and petitions to God when the very leaders that claim Christianity are hiding information about who is sick amongst themselves?

We demand that the Permanent Secretaries and other higher ranking official be named so that our poor brothers and sisters that deal with them and their families as workers and otherwise can be treated and quarantined (including their families and all who may have come in contact with them) or else we are all doomed and finished. It would be very correct for anyone and everyone to conclude that our government’s continued failure to name these infected PSs and other highly ranking official probably Ministers is failure to govern the country.
