Residents of Lusaka’s Obama area in Chelston extension are fearing for their lives and property following continued break-ins by thieves.
Evans Mumba whose house was nearly broken into by the robbers on the early hours of Wednesday appealed to the Zambia Police service to intensify patrols in the area which is fast expanding in population but lacks a police post with Kamanga Police being the nearest.
Some residents have in the recent past complained that thieves had targeted Plasma and E.L.D Television sets which are believed to be containing a component of high value. The said component is said to be sold to a suspected Congolese businessman.
But Zambia Police Spokesperson Esther Nwata-Katongo said in an interview that the police alone could not handle the situation as the service was shot of human power and faced transport challenges to attend to each and every emergency.
Katongo however appealed to residents to form up neighborhood watch groups, adding that doing so would be supplementing the efforts that the police was making in proving security for its citizens.
Meanwhile, the residents have continued to appeal to Zesco to consider load shading residential areas during day time and restoring the commodity in the evenings, adding that they needed lights for security reasons in the night especially when it was raining as thieves took advantage of the dark to break into homes.
