In his capacity as President of the Roger Federer Foundation, Roger visited several days Zambia.
Federer had the opportunity to see the results and impact of
the ongoing education programmes in three different community schools in the Eastern Province of the country first-hand.
Federer was able to enjoy time interacting with children, parents and community members and was even assisting community teachers during a school lesson.
Before heading to the field he also met with the President Edgar Chagwa Lungu in Lusaka as well as other key government representatives on a provincial level.
The Roger Federer Foundation started its engagement in Zambia in 2011 together with its local partners People’s Action Forum, Reformed Open Community Schools and Zambia Open Community School.
To date the programmes cover 2300 community schools in 53 Districts of the country.
So far 220,000 children have benefitted from a higher quality of education.
By end of 2018 the overall investment in the country will be 5.1 Mio USD.
Since almost 15 years the Roger Federer Foundation is engaging in education programmes for children living in poverty in Africa and Switzerland.
It only works with carefully selected local organizations in long-term partnerships and seeks for system change and sustainable impact.
The Roger Federer Foundation aims therefore
to enable and empower the local population in question to assume their responsibility for the solution of its problems with regard to the contents, organization and finances. In 2018 18 programs are running in Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Switzerland for around
7.5 million CHF.
The foundation’s aim is that 1 million children will have
benefitted from the programmes by end of 2018. This goal will be exceeded.
