_Mr. President of the African Union Commission_, _Mr. Secretary-General of the United Nations_, _Ladies and Gentlemen Heads of International Organizations_, We are writing to you as citizens concerned about respect for human rights and the principles of humanity, to request your intervention in the current situation of Dr. Ibrahima Kassory Fofana, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Guinea, currently hospitalized in a critical state of health. We have learned with dismay that a request for appearance has been addressed to Dr. Kassory Fofana, who would be forced to answer questions from magistrates from his hospital bed on November 19, 2024, despite a state of health requiring calm and sustained medical attention. This requirement, in the context of the ongoing legal proceedings, raises serious concerns about its impact on his health and the fundamental rights to which every human being should be entitled, including those in detention or in legal proceedings.
Dr. Kassory Fofana’s situation justifies specialized care and medical monitoring that local resources cannot fully provide. The doctors in charge of his case have recommended medical evacuation so that he can receive appropriate care abroad. Maintaining his appearance in his current state not only poses a threat to his health, but also goes against international principles relating to respect for human dignity and the right to care. In this regard, we request your kindness to intervene with the Guinean authorities to ensure that Dr. Kassory Fofana’s rights are fully respected and that he is treated with the necessary humanity and dignity, including by benefiting from a temporary suspension of the proceedings for medical reasons. We insist on the fact that our request is based exclusively on humanitarian and health considerations. In no case is it a question of obstructing justice, but only of protecting a human life in a moment of great vulnerability. We hope that our request will receive your attention and that actions will be taken in favor of Dr. Kassory Fofana so that he can receive the necessary care in conditions adapted to his state of health. Nous vous écrivons en notre qualité de citoyens préoccupés par le respect des droits humains et des principes d’humanité, pour solliciter votre intervention dans la situation actuelle de Dr Ibrahima Kassory Fofana, ancien Premier ministre de la République de Guinée, actuellement hospitalisé dans un état de santé critique.
Nous avons appris avec consternation qu’une demande de comparution a été adressée à Dr Kassory Fofana, qui serait contraint de répondre aux questions de magistrats depuis son lit d’hôpital le 19 novembre 2024, malgré un état de santé nécessitant une attention médicale calme et soutenue. Cette exigence, dans le cadre de la procédure judiciaire en cours, soulève de graves préoccupations quant à son impact sur sa santé et aux droits fondamentaux auxquels tout être humain devrait pouvoir prétendre, y compris ceux en détention ou en procédure judiciaire.
La situation de Dr Kassory Fofana justifie des soins spécialisés et un suivi médical que les moyens locaux ne peuvent pas pleinement assurer. Les médecins en charge de son dossier ont recommandé une évacuation sanitaire afin qu’il puisse recevoir les soins appropriés à l’étranger. Le maintien de sa comparution dans son état actuel constitue non seulement une menace pour sa santé, mais va également à l’encontre des principes internationaux relatifs au respect de la dignité humaine et du droit aux soins.
Nous sollicitons, à cet égard, votre bienveillance pour intervenir auprès des autorités guinéennes afin d’assurer que les droits de Dr Kassory Fofana soient pleinement respectés et qu’il soit traité avec l’humanité et la dignité nécessaires, notamment en bénéficiant d’une suspension temporaire de la procédure pour raisons médicales.
Nous insistons sur le fait que notre demande se fonde exclusivement sur des considérations humanitaires et sanitaires. En aucun cas, il ne s’agit de faire obstacle à la justice, mais uniquement de protéger une vie humaine dans un moment de grande vulnérabilité.
Nous espérons que notre requête recevra votre attention et que des actions seront entreprises en faveur de Dr Kassory Fofana afin qu’il puisse recevoir les soins nécessaires dans des conditions adaptées à son état de santé.
