With about 6 years remaining for Zambia and other countries to combat deforestation by 2030, we commit to create and launch a countrywide mobilisation of state and non-state actors to plant one million trees annually from 2024 to 2030 led by each constituency planting 650 trees through the Education for Trees campaign. Inspired by the increased numbers of funders towards the fight against Climate and the nomination of ZANACO to manage Green Climate Fund mechanism for SMEs and other stakeholders.
What is the Education For Trees Campaign: We will give and award learners from primary, secondary and tertiary level who plant 10 trees in exchange for 10 big books, 10 pens, 10 pencils, mathematics set, school bag and jersey for planting 10 trees. This is2our strategy for supporting education and inspired by Nelson Mandela saying,’ Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to transform the world.
Why this mobilisation? The year 2024 marks exactly 6 years for Zambia and other world leaders to achieve the Leaders pledge that was made in Glasgow, United Kingdom. President Hakainde Hichilema was among world leaders that signed the pledge. COP28 recently called on state and non-state actors to scale up actions in reversing the impact and effects of climate Change.
Inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals mantra #LeaveNoOnBehind, this strategy acknowledges the limited time and sense of urgency and agrees with the Public Private Partnership that has worked in some cases and could be improved. This engagement and mobilisation has taken the decentralisation to collaborate with law makers as members of parliament, traditional leadership and government ministries and all non-state actors. Persons with disabilities, pensioners, women and everyone will be made a priority in the crusade towards the planting of two million trees in Zambia. We believe that this annual deliberate intention and commitment could lead Zambia to become the champion towards attainment of the Glasgow pledge.
