Zambia will host the third annual International Conference on Public Health in Africa (CPHIA) from November 27 to 30, 2023. The CPHIA is a convening of African leaders, policymakers, public health professionals, and other stakeholders to discuss and address the most pressing public health challenges facing the continent.
This year’s CPHIA theme is “Breaking Barriers: Repositioning Africa in the Global Health Architecture.” This theme reflects the growing recognition that Africa must play a more leading role in shaping the global health agenda. The CPHIA 2023 will focus on a range of issues, including:
Pandemic preparedness and resilient financing mechanisms for Africa
Fostering African-led innovation in vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics
Delivering universal health coverage in Africa through strengthened and equitable health systems
Access to adequate healthcare for young girls and women in Africa
Safeguarding Africa’s health security from health emergencies, biosecurity, climate change, and other threats
Transforming health in Africa through digital innovation
The CPHIA 2023 is expected to attract over 5,000 participants from over 50 countries. The conference will feature plenary sessions, abstract sessions, side events, and other networking opportunities.
Statements from others on the CPHIA 2023:

It is also an opportunity to showcase African innovation and to strengthen partnerships between African governments, civil society, the private sector, and academia.” – Dr. John Nkengasong, Director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC)
“The CPHIA 2023 is a valuable opportunity for African public health professionals to share their knowledge and expertise, and to learn from each other. It is also a platform for African governments to make commitments to improving public health on the continent.” – Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO)
“The CPHIA 2023 is an important platform for promoting African-led innovation in public health. It is also an opportunity to showcase the continent’s progress in public health, and to highlight the challenges that still need to be addressed.” – Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa
The CPHIA 2023 is expected to be a landmark event in the history of public health in Africa. The conference will provide a unique opportunity for African leaders and stakeholders to come together to discuss and address the most pressing public health challenges facing the continent, and to develop strategies for building a healthier and more prosperous Africa for all.
