PRONOUNCEMENTS by President Hakainde Hichilema relating to economic liberation of women and the youth continue to give hope, acknowledges former Zambia National Women’s Lobby (ZNWL) Beauty Katebe.
Alluding to the Head of State’s maiden speech delivered at Parliament, Ms. Katebe said the pronouncement gave a general outline on priority areas of work especially a noted promotion of the welfare of women and the girl-child.
Ms. Katebe argued in her submission that stakeholders remain hopeful that once pronouncements by President Hichilema are fulfilled, women and youth emancipation will be effectively addressed as they border on investment in health, social protection, water and sanitation.
“The Republican President in the same speech made a commitment to ensuring that girl children are accorded equal opportunities to access education by addressing teething challenges faced by the female learners by providing educational support services such as bursary. The plan is a positive step to attain the vision and it can provide a clear route to women and youth emancipation,” advised Ms. Katebe.
Making her word heard a day after the continent commemorated the African Freedom Day themed:” Leveraging Natural Resources to boost Food Security,” Ms. Katebe observed that there shall never be a true liberation in Africa, until the emancipation of women and the youths is attained.
Ms. Katebe argued real social, political and economic liberation for the women and the youths can only be attained through a robust political will among countries driven by time frames and deliberate actions.
“True freedom in Africa must be felt by the marginalised in society,” said Ms. Katebe.
