LUSAKA – The U.S. Embassy recently awarded K1.3 million to six Zambian community-based organizations through the U.S. Ambassador’s Special Self-Help small grant program.  These grants will expand economic opportunities and improve the standard of living in communities in four provinces.

 

The Special Self-Help program grants provide financial support from the American people directly to Zambian community organizations committed to improving the lives of community members through sustainable projects that bolster food security, education, and health.  These organizations will take innovative approaches to reach traditionally underserved areas or populations.

Grant awards will support the following projects:

 

• Rehabilitation of two cattle dip tanks in the Choma District of Southern Province. The tanks will be rebuilt in cooperation with Maanu Mabulwana Cooperative in the Simpweze Community, and Kaumba Agricultural Cooperative in the Namashoba Community, providing disease control to over 7,000 local villagers;

 

• Poultry broiler project with Nangoma Rural Youth Development in Mumbwa, Central Province, to provide food security and member empowerment;

 

• Environmentally-friendly charcoal production, utilizing agricultural waste by Yopcee Youth Club in Chibuluma Township, Copperbelt Province;

 

• Construction of an agricultural production facility by the Touching Lives Women’s Club in Chilanga District, Lusaka, to assist with the financial security of vulnerable populations; and

 

• Construction and fencing of a borehole in Nakanyanga Village, Kalomo District, Southern Province, to provide safe drinking water and prevent water-born diseases.

Since its inception, the U.S. Ambassador’s Special Self-Help program has provided over K29.8 million to 124 community-based organizations throughout Zambia.
