TOP STAR: KEY ROLE IN ZAMBIAN TV DIGITALIZATION

In 2006, over 156 members of ITU in Geneva signed a binding treaty about digital broadcasting migration. African countries are committed to switching off analogue transmission and migrating to digital broadcasting by 2015, however, currently most of African countries including Zambia haven’t achieved the goal. To realize digitalization of TV industry has also been an urgent task for Zambia. As a major digital TV operator in Zambia, Top Star plays a key role in its TV digitalization.
Top Star is a joint venture created by Zambian National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) and the Africa’s leading digital TV operator SarTimes, having been assigned by the Zambian government to help realize the digitalization of Zambia.
StarTimes is a major System integrator, Technology provider, Network operator, and Content provider in African television broadcasting industry. It has received licenses and had their broadcasting networks operational in 30 African countries including Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Rwanda, Burundi, Guinea, Madagascar , Malawi , Republic of Central Africa and etc.
StarTimes is assisting to ensure that the African continent and media development progresses to the next level in digital television broadcasting as it is evident in the successful digital transformation of Tanzania. StarTimes is now the key partner to Africa in her effort to migrate from analogue to digital.
In Africa, StarTimes has received substantial awards from many African governments and people, becoming a firm favorite for the African people.
On June 17th, 2015, Star Media Tanzania Limited received Certificate of Appreciation, “For invaluable contribution to the success of migration from analogue to digital television broadcasting in Tanzania”, signed by Minister of Communications Science and Technology, and Chairman of National Steering Committee on Digital Broadcasting of Tanzania.
On Oct. 24th, 2015, StarTimes Tanzania Ltd. received the Gold Medal of International Star of WQC in Paris. The star series medals issued by WQC are considered as the Oscar or Nobel Prize of the business circle around the world. It will tell out the most excellent companies in terms of leadership, technology and innovation.
In 2011, StarTimes hosted the First African Digital TV Development Forum, the presence of important guests, inspiring themes forward looking ideas and win-win models for cooperation, made the Forum a much-discussed phenomenon in Africa’s television industry. This Forum has been held for 6 consecutive years, having helped to promote the development of Digital TV in Africa.

At the latest forum in this year, over 300 delegates from 39 countries, including ministers of broadcasting & TV administrations, heads of national TV stations from African countries gathered in Beijing, admiring StarTimes’ contribution to African TV digitalization and vowing to push further development of African TV industry’s digital migration.
