In an effort to equip farmers with essential knowledge on combating fall army worms and sensitization on sustainable agriculture financing(SAFF), farmers in Samfya District, Luapula Province, have commenced trainings.
Jonathan Banda, the District Agriculture Extension Methodology Officer, emphasized the importance of these trainings in arming farmers with the necessary skills to tackle the threat of Army Worms.
The training initiative began in late December 2023, with Block Extension Officers, Camp Officers, and Lead Farmers, with a focus on reaching farmers across different zones.
“We are monitoring the implementation of these trainings by Block and Camp officers to farmers in all zones, ensuring comprehensive coverage,” stated Mr. Banda.
Encouraging farmers to take advantage of the Sustainable Agriculture Financing Facility loans, Mr. Banda highlighted the benefits introduced by the government to uphold food security in the country.
He urged farmers to inquire at the District Agriculture Coordinators Office wherever they did not understand, emphasizing their readiness to assist on the loans.
Michael Mulundwe, the Block Extension Officer leading the training, expressed satisfaction with the farmers’ response in his block.
“The turnout is good for this zone from Central 1 Camp, and this training will protect many farmers from the devastating impact of Fall Army Worms,” Mr. Mulundwe stated.
Farmers who participated in the training expressed gratitude to the Block Officer and the government for their commitment to safeguarding crops in the area.
” This training is important because now we have the knowledge and if we apply it well our crops will be fine,” Weston Chilufya
“We appreciate our Block and Camp officers for ensuring we receive necessary trainings. We have applied for Credit window loans and are awaiting processing by the banks, although there is a slight delay,” Shadreck Puts said
Noting the importance of technical knowledge, farmers acknowledged the difficulty in combatting pesticides without proper training.
They urged fellow farmers to access technical support available at the Ministry of Agriculture through the Camp officers and the District Agriculture Coordinators Office.
These training initiatives underscore the collaborative efforts between government officials and farmers in Samfya District, reflecting a commitment to sustainable agriculture practices and pest management.
