By the end of this week, the seven day ultimatum that UPP gave the MMD-run PF Government to regularise the scandalous maize deal will expire.
We wish to update the nation that we are a step ahead of all the corrupt officials who are using the name of government to plunder public resources. If President Edgar Lungu does not act on this matter, UPP will take the following actions next week:
1. Petition the Chief Justice to set up a tribunal to investigate the Minister of Commerce and Trade and her Agriculture counterpart for failing to provide leadership over this matter which has brought the government into disrepute.
2. Seek an order of mandamus from the court to force the Minister of Commerce and Trade to do justice over the matter.
3. Write to the Secretary General of COMESA and seek the intervention of the COMESA Competition Commission. The regulations thereof are very clear and we verily believe that the corrupt government officials and the conmen involved have erred.
We must mention that apart from the current 100, 000 MT, there is another scandal involving 80, 000 MT of maize. Our prayer is that government will act expeditiously to ensure that corruption is rooted out before we expose more embarrassing deals. Our exposures are not in any way meant to undermine the government, but a pragmatic call to action against corruption in our nation.
UPP is seriously concerned with the skyrocketing corrupt practices in government. This is injurious not only to genuine businesses, but also to our farmers most of whom have not even received inputs up to now. Reports from credible sources indicate that many districts have not received inputs and yet farmers have made their contributions through cooperatives.
We are also aware that some of the farmers have not yet been paid for the produce of the last farming season and yet senior government officials are thriving on the sweat of peasant farmers through scandalous international sales.
We urge the government to show their commitment to diversify the economy from copper mining to agriculture by action and not empty words.
God bless Zambia!
