Lusaka, Zambia- Zambian Breweries’ Manja Pamodzi project has joined hands with other stakeholders in educating pupils in Lusaka schools about waste management.
Manja Pamodzi’s week-long programme school’s education and awareness campaign, supported by Lusaka Water Security Initiative (LuWSI) and other partners from the private and public sectors, civil society and international organisations aim working to ensure proper waste management and consequently quality water supply and security.
School awareness workshops were held at Muchinga, Twashuka, Kasamba and New Kanyama primary schools, and new Matero secondary school, with about 40 pupils targeted in each school.
Manja Pamodzi project manager Elaine Kafwimbi said the programme was aimed at empowering pupils with knowledge on how to keep their environment clean.
“This programme is on-going. We want the pupils to know the impact that waste has on the environment. What they can do with recyclable waste and the importance of keeping their environment clean,” she said.
“We are also teaching them the importance of having waste bins and placing waste in the bins, as throwing them anyhow does not only make the environment dirty but can be a health hazard. Some of waste takes a very long time to degrade, hence the need to understand the right way to dispose of them.”
