Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure Permanent Secretary Charles Mushota says government through Minister Ronald Chitotela has finalized an all-inclusive Zambian National Housing Policy (NHI).
Moments before handing over Two Stabilized Soil Building Machines (SSBM) to Chadiza District Farmers Union Housing initiative yesterday at Sankhani Guest house in Chadiza District, Engineer Mushota said government is aware of the unfavorable factors that hinder successful housing development in Zambia.
Speaking earlier, University of Zambia (UNZA) Vice Chancellor Luke Mumba said the Great East Road Campus is dedicated to sustainable development of technological solutions, targeted at increasing habitable housing.
Engineer Mushota attributed the housing deficit as a consequence of high interest rates, limited mortgages, unaffordable building material and inadequate access to land throughout Zambia’s 10 Provinces-Central, Copperbelt, Eastern, Luapula, Lusaka, Muchinga, Northern, North-Western, Southern and Western.

“The machines have come at an opportune time when the country is faced with the high housing deficit and majority of the citizenry are struggling to afford to construct decent houses. The Ministry is partnering with the University of Zambia- Technology Development and Advisory Unit (TDAU) to train artisans in the Stabilized Soil Block Building Systems, culturally acceptable,” assured Engineer Mushota.

Engineer Mushota is optimistic that the initiative will contribute to promoting low cost housing sustainable building practices that reduce building impact on the environment.
And Professor Mumba said the institution UNZA has devised technology creating breakthrough solutions critical to poverty eradication, through food security and wealth creation responsive to global climate change.
“UNZA is fostering appropriate technology and investments. said apart from the brick making machine, the University of Zambia was working on designing and improving other prototype projects such as the human powered vegetable cutting machine, a portable towing bar for light vehicles and the life jacket,” Professor Mumba explained.
