By Lewis Mwape – Executive Director Zambia Council for Social Development (ZCSD),

As developments Actors we have spent time to analyze many development tools, visions, agenda and plans. We have not asked a question on what could be the root cause of fragility of our development?

What is the importance of a dynamic Curriculum Setting to building a sustainable and strong development Foundation?

In the Zambian set up most Curriculum Specialists are subject Teachers in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English Geography and other subjects. These are well trained friends locally and abroad.

What is the problems then?

  1. Curriculum setting is political! If a political party intending to form government has poor perception of what a good education is, then they will derive a poor a curriculum formulation based on party theory or philosophy.

The political party must understand the linkage between education , economics and poverty reduction. If you see poor education governance, it definitely spills over into poor development, meaning that the development path is either blocked or narrowed!

  1. The very design of the curriculum leadership is a problem. We the subject Specialists in many cases focus on improving subject content and can be more academic but within the education principles/domains of (a) Cognitive dealing with Knowledge (b) Psychomotor dealing with manual or physical skills (c) Affective dealing with growth in feelings or emotional areas including attitudes. For an educationist, this is very important.

Again what is the problem with this direction? What do we need to improve in curriculum setting in the earlier years of education? How should the higher education look like?
