My thoughts are with Xolani Gwala

By Ambassador Emmanuel Mwamba

He hosted us at the New Partnership for Africa’s Development  (NEPAD) Forum, where I had that famous clash with His Excellency Thabo Mbeki over xenophobia. NEPAD is the technical body of the African Union (AU).

So when I heard that Xolani Gwala was fighting cancer, I felt for him and prayed!

Isiah 53:5

“But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.”

A few weeks ago, Gwala announced that he would be off-air indefinitely because he was dealing with a “medical challenge”.

While he’s been away, Stephen Grootes has been standing in for him as Breakfast Show host.

In an interview with Grootes on Friday morning, Gwala revealed the challenge he’s been facing while maintaining a positive outlook.

“I’m fine, as you can see, but I am living with something inside and it is massive. After thorough investigations, they found that I have colon cancer which is advanced,” Gwala told Grootes.

Gwala went on to say that he will be starting chemotherapy next week and that he is ready for the fight.

“So far they have done the first operation to take out the tumour, but obviously there is still quite a lot that still needs to happen. As early as next week, I am starting chemotherapy,” he said.

“It is going to be a very long fight, partly because it was advanced – a difficult fight, but a fight I am ready for.”

He went on to speak about how one day he felt feverish, only to find out that he has cancer.

“This was so sudden. In April, I was running the London marathon. Suddenly you have a fever, you go to the doctor and you are told you have cancer,” he said.

Gwala’s oncologist Dr Omondi Ogudi also revealed that his cancer has spread to the liver.

Our thoughts an prayers are with Gwala, as he begins his battle against cancer.
