cepr signature-plain-andrew without copyWHY: Lusaka’s demand for water, estimated to now be over 600,000m3 per day,
significantly outstrips supply from the Kafue River and groundwater. The Kafue River
is threatened by climate change, land use degradation, and abstractions from
agriculture and hydropower, as well as pollution from the mining industry. Water
shortages are increasingly becoming common, caused by a series of droughts and
power deficits. This causes both communities and businesses to suffer. The health
and prosperity of Lusaka is fully dependent on its water secure future, which can only
be achieved through an effective multi-stakeholder collaboration amongst the public
and private sectors, civil society and international community. The Lusaka Water
Security Initiative (LuWSI) was established to address this need. It is a multistakeholder
collaboration to implement strategic and timely projects that will
concretely contribute to improving water security for Lusaka’s residents and
businesses. LuWSI focuses on five action areas: Groundwater pollution prevention
through resource protection and improved sanitation | Sustainable groundwater
exploitation | Sustainable water management in the Kafue River Basin | Access to
water supply and sanitation services in an expanding city | Urban flood risk
management
